Russian Researchers Develop Method That Could Support New Drug Development
Moscow: A research team from Omsk University and the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences has developed a new method that could contribute to the development of treatments for cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.
According to a university source cited by Russia Today, the researchers succeeded in creating a mechanism for synthesising biologically active pyridin-2-one derivatives, compounds that serve as key building blocks in a range of medicines used to treat chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension and cancer.
The newly developed technique enables scientists to precisely control molecular structures by modifying reaction conditions, providing greater flexibility in designing compounds with specific properties for pharmaceutical applications.
Laboratory tests conducted on the BT474 human breast cancer cell line showed that several of the synthesised compounds significantly reduced cancer cell activity. The findings also indicated that toxicity levels varied according to the molecular substituents used in the compounds.
Morphological studies further confirmed the death of cancer cells following exposure to the developed compounds, while control samples remained viable throughout the testing process.
The researchers noted that the findings could support future efforts in drug discovery and the development of targeted therapeutic compounds.
