Oman to Showcase Water Resource Management Experience at Salalah Symposium

Salalah: The International United Nations Symposium on Water Resources Sustainability, themed “Water and Climate Change”, will begin tomorrow in the Wilayat of Salalah, with the participation of specialists and experts from Oman and abroad.

The two-day symposium is organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in partnership with Dhofar Municipality and Nama Dhofar Services, and in cooperation with the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the Omani Water Society.

The symposium will highlight Oman’s experience in managing and sustaining water resources, including efforts to address the impacts of climate change on surface and groundwater resources.

It will also discuss approaches to managing risks associated with floods, drought and salinity, as well as efforts to diversify water sources through seawater desalination and the reuse of treated water.

The programme will address ways to improve water-use efficiency in the agricultural sector, protect groundwater reserves and preserve, maintain and rehabilitate the aflaj, Oman’s traditional irrigation systems.

The symposium will further explore the role of modern technologies and innovation in water resource management, including artificial intelligence, remote sensing, geographic information systems and hydrological modelling.

The event aims to facilitate the exchange of expertise and experiences in sustainable water management and explore innovative approaches to strengthening water security and resilience in the face of climate change.
