Muscat: The shrimp-fishing season will begin from tomorrow Thursday, Sept 1 in the Sultanate of Oman and the season will continue for three months, until the end of November.

The shrimp-fishing season starts in September and ends in November every year.

Omani coastal areas have 12 shrimp species, of which four – white Indian shrimp, white shrimp, tiger prawns and dotted shrimp-are caught using traditional nets.

The Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources has completed preparations for the season by implementing a number of guidance and awareness activities for artisanal fishermen before the start of the season. The Department of Fisheries Control and Licensing at the General Directorate of Fish Resources Development at the Ministry will intensify the work of fish control teams along the coasts of the governorates during the season.

The Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries and Water Resources calls on artisanal fishermen who fish for shrimp to adhere to use of fishing methods and equipment allowed in the season

It also called on those who deal in buying, selling, trading and exporting shrimp to adhere to the dates of the beginning and end of the shrimp fishing season to register their shrimp stock after the end of the season. Any trade or export of shrimp after the end of the season on November will be prohibited unless they are registered with the Ministry.
