Muscat: Shrimp fishing season will start on the first Tuesday, 1 September, the three-month shrimp fishing season starts until the end of November. Coastal villages in the governorates of Dhofar, Central and South Sharqiyah will witness an active commercial movement during the season, especially activities related to the fisheries sector, transport and services sectors.
The total production of shrimp from artisanal fishing in 2019 amounted to 863 tons, with a total value estimated at about 2.9 million Omani riyals, and the amount of its exports amounted to 320 tons, while the locally consumed quantities amounted to about 543 tons.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has alerted artisanal fishermen and all companies, institutions, hotels, restaurants, and individuals who deal in the areas of buying, selling, trading and exporting shrimp to adhere to the start and end dates of the shrimp fishing season and to record the quantities of shrimp they have after the end of the season, noting that trading in Or exporting any quantities of shrimp wealth after the end of the season at the end of next November, unless it is registered with the Ministry.
The Ministry has completed preparations for the season, as a number of extension and awareness activities have been implemented in this regard, and the monitoring teams will intensify work along the coasts of the three governorates during the season.
Shrimp belongs to the crustacean family, which is an essential source of protein and can be considered an alternative food for meat protein, as it is characterized by containing a very small amount of fat, and shrimp also contains vitamin (B12) and omega-3 fatty acids of health importance, and shrimp is involved in food and medical processing.
