Spain Continues Evacuation of Cruise Ship Passengers Amid Hantavirus Cases

Madrid: Spanish authorities announced today the evacuation of the remaining passengers aboard the cruise ship linked to the hantavirus outbreak through a port in Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands before their return to their respective countries.

Spanish Minister of Health Monica Garcia said that the final two evacuation operations for passengers aboard the vessel anchored near Tenerife are scheduled to depart this afternoon.

She added that 94 passengers have been evacuated so far.

Garcia noted that evacuation flights will continue in the coming hours to several countries, including the Netherlands, Canada, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States and Australia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recorded six confirmed hantavirus cases out of eight suspected cases linked to the ship, including three deaths.

Health authorities stated that hantavirus is considered a rare virus for which no vaccine or specific treatment is currently available.
