State of Emergency Declared in Bandar Abbas after a blast occurs at Shahid Rajaee Port in southern Iran
Nearly 200 people were injured from a massive blast on Saturday that ripped through a key port in southern Iran, state media said.
State television, citing local emergency services, reported that “195 people have been injured, dozens of whom have been transferred to medical centres” in the area of the southern port of Shahid Rajaee.
State media reported earlier a “massive explosion” and fire at a key port in the Iranian province of Hormozgan more than 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) south of Tehran.
“The explosion occurred in a part of the Shahid Rajaee port dock, and we are extinguishing the fire,” state television quoted senior Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Administration official Esmaeil Malekizadeh as saying.
“The cause of this incident was the explosion of several containers stored in the Shahid Rajaee Port wharf area. We are currently evacuating and transferring the injured to medical centres,” a local crisis management official told state TV.
