Three Die from Hantavirus in Venezuela, Health Ministry Says

Caracas: Venezuelan health authorities announced today that three people have died from hantavirus, while confirming there is no evidence of person-to-person transmission of the rodent-borne disease.

The Ministry of Health said the three confirmed deaths were recorded in Anzoátegui state. It added that hantavirus is also suspected in the deaths of two healthcare workers in Barinas state, with investigations still underway to determine the cause.

The ministry noted that the suspected cases in Barinas have not been linked to the confirmed fatalities in Anzoátegui, located about 655 kilometres away, describing the incidents as separate and unrelated.

Authorities stressed that the reported cases do not pose a risk to the general public and announced that health teams will be deployed to the affected states to strengthen monitoring and safeguard public health.
