Muscat Classic Victory for Swiss Cyclist Mauro Schmid

Muscat: Swiss cyclist Mauro Schmid of Team Jayco AlUla won the Muscat Classic race, held today as part of the Tour of Oman 2026, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth in cooperation with the Oman Cycling Federation.

British rider Adam Yates of UAE Team Emirates finished second, while Spanish cyclist Cristian Scaroni claimed third place.

The race started from Al Mouj Muscat and passed through several tourist landmarks, heading towards the coastal road in the Wilayat of Seeb, then through the mountain road in the Wilayat of Al Amerat. The route continued via Darsait, Wadi Kabir, Yiti and Qantab, before turning from Al Bustan Roundabout towards Sidab and concluding in front of the State Council, covering a total distance of 171 kilometres.

The Muscat Classic is classified as a UCI Asia first-class one-day race, with the winner earning 250 points in the world ranking points system.

Meanwhile, the first stage of the Tour of Oman 2026 will start tomorrow over a distance of 170.9 kilometres, beginning at Al Khuwair Square and passing through several areas, including Al Amerat and Qurayyat, before concluding at Hawiyat Najm.

The stage finish at Hawiyat Najm highlights its touristic significance. The site is a natural sinkhole located in the Wilayat of Qurayyat in the Governorate of Muscat, with a diameter of around 40 metres and a water depth of approximately 20 metres, forming a turquoise lake that attracts visitors for swimming and scenic views.
