Ankara: Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, expressed concern over emerging proposals by Iran and the United States to introduce new regulations governing passage through the Strait of Hormuz, warning of potential challenges in securing the vital maritime route.
In statements to Anadolu Agency, Fidan stressed that reopening the strait should be achieved through diplomatic means, following the failure of recent talks between Washington and Tehran to reach an agreement on ending the ongoing conflict.
He indicated that progress could still be achieved within weeks if negotiations proceed in a constructive manner, noting that Iran is expected to review and respond to a proposal submitted by the United States. However, he pointed out that disagreements over uranium enrichment remain a major obstacle.
Fidan stated that if the issue of uranium enrichment becomes a point of deadlock, it could complicate efforts to reach an agreement, adding that both sides appear aware of the importance of securing a ceasefire.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most strategic oil shipping routes, and any disruption could have significant implications for global energy markets.
The Turkish Foreign Minister also warned of the risk of broader regional escalation, referring to developments in Lebanon and cautioning that tensions could expand further.
He underscored the importance of establishing a regional security framework, calling for enhanced cooperation among neighbouring countries to maintain stability and prevent further escalation.
