New York: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is convening a series of meetings this week to discuss developments in the Middle East and Africa.
The Council, chaired by China for May, will hold consultations on Tuesday on the Secretary-General’s report regarding the implementation of Resolution 1559 on Lebanon. The resolution calls for the withdrawal of foreign forces. Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, will brief the Council.
On Thursday, the Council will hold two meetings on the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) to review developments in the disputed border region between Sudan and South Sudan.
The Military Staff Committee is scheduled to meet on Friday, 8 May 2026, to discuss military coordination within the United Nations system.
China will also convene a high-level open debate at ministerial level on “Promoting Commitment to the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the Multilateral International System” under the agenda item “Maintenance of International Peace and Security”. The session will be chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres expected to brief later this month.
The Council will further hold its annual open debate on the protection of civilians, with participation from the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
In addition, the UNSC will continue its regular briefings on developments in Syria and the wider Middle East, including the Palestinian issue.
The agenda reflects ongoing international challenges related to peace and security across multiple regions.
