18 Million at Risk of Hunger in Yemen as Aid Funding Declines

New York: The United Nations has warned that more than 18 million people in Yemen are at risk of severe hunger amid increasing challenges facing humanitarian operations in the country.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated that 22.3 million people in Yemen require humanitarian assistance in 2026, highlighting growing needs, funding shortages and limited access to affected populations.

The Office indicated that these challenges are forcing humanitarian partners to scale back essential support, warning that failure to take urgent action could lead to loss of lives and further deterioration of basic services.

It added that around 19.3 million people face increasing health risks, as nearly 40 percent of health facilities are either partially operational or out of service.

According to the UN, the 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan requires $2.16 billion to provide assistance to 12 million people across Yemen.

Yemen continues to face one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises following years of conflict that have affected key sectors, including healthcare, despite a relative decline in hostilities since April 2022.
