Oman, Algeria Exchange Expertise to Boost Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security

Muscat: Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, today received Eng. Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, at the headquarters of the Ministry in Muscat.

Dr. Al Habsi welcomed the Algerian Minister and his accompanying delegation, stressing the importance of sustaining cooperation between Oman and Algeria in the fields of agriculture, fisheries and water resources. He noted the depth of relations between the two countries and the steady progress they continue to witness.

For his part, Eng. Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid expressed his appreciation for the Sultanate of Oman and the achievements it has made in developing its agricultural and fisheries sectors. He affirmed Algeria’s keenness to strengthen cooperation frameworks and to benefit from the exchange of expertise in agriculture, marine fishing and rural development.

The meeting featured a visual presentation titled “Achievements and Milestones in the Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources Sectors for 2024,” highlighting key projects and initiatives implemented in the Sultanate during the year. Another presentation on food security was delivered by Eng. Abdulaziz Al Shukaili, Director of the Investment Department, outlining national efforts to reinforce food security infrastructure and ensure the sustainability of supply chains.

The two sides also reviewed a joint presentation on “Omani-Algerian Cooperation Opportunities in the Agricultural Sector,” during which experts from both countries explored prospective investment areas. These included desert soil management, precision agriculture, date palm development, tropical fruit cultivation, horticulture growth, and mechanisms for advancing agricultural management and transformation.

The meeting concluded with an extensive discussion on future prospects for cooperation. Both sides explored practical pathways for enhancing joint initiatives and strengthening coordination in research and technical programs, with the aim of supporting sustainable food security and advancing the agricultural and fisheries sectors in both countries.
