Modified CRYAB Protein Shows Potential to Reduce Parkinson’s Damage

Moscow: Russian researchers have found that a modified form of the CRYAB protein, which accumulates in individuals with diabetes, can break down toxic protein clusters linked to Parkinson’s disease.

The Russian Science Foundation stated that the discovery could support the development of new treatments for Parkinson’s, a progressive neurological disorder affecting millions worldwide.

Professor Vladimir Muronets of Moscow State University said the findings highlight a biological link between diabetes and Parkinson’s disease, while offering insights into how natural protective mechanisms in the brain may be used in early-stage intervention.

The study showed that the CRYAB protein can be altered through targeted mutations, enabling it to interact differently with harmful protein aggregates.

Researchers observed that while the modified protein provides less protection against heat stress, it gains the ability to reduce the formation of toxic alpha-synuclein aggregates, which are associated with Parkinson’s disease.

The findings may contribute to advancing treatment approaches and improving understanding of the relationship between diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases.
