Dollar Strengthens as Fed Rate Decision Looms, Bitcoin Falls

Tokyo: The US dollar remained near a one-month high today as investors awaited the outcome of the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy meeting, with expectations that the possibility of an interest rate hike remains under consideration despite easing inflationary pressure from lower oil prices.

The US Dollar Index, which measures the currency against a basket of major currencies including the euro and the Japanese yen, edged up 0.03 percent to 101.55, while the euro slipped 0.01 percent to USD 1.1366.

Against the Japanese yen, the dollar gained 0.05 percent to 163.82 yen, while sterling eased 0.02 percent to USD 1.3284.

The US Federal Reserve is scheduled to conclude its two-day monetary policy meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, with global markets closely monitoring the outcome for signals on future interest rate policy.

Among other major currencies, the Australian dollar declined 0.11 percent to USD 0.6981, while the New Zealand dollar fell 0.12 percent to USD 0.5766.

In cryptocurrency trading, Bitcoin dropped 1.88 percent to USD 63,694.59, while Ether declined 2.83 percent to USD 1,890.30.
