Oman’s Royal Hospital Successfully Implants First CardioMEMS Heart Failure Monitor
Muscat, Sept. 20 (ONA) — The National Heart Centre at the Royal Hospital has recorded a medical milestone with the successful implantation of the first CardioMEMS sensor in the Sultanate of Oman for remote monitoring of patients with heart failure.
The procedure was performed by a specialised medical team comprising Dr. Arif bin Ishaq Al Balushi and Dr. Amna bint Sulaiman Al Busaidi, marking a step towards expanding the use of advanced medical technologies in the monitoring and management of heart failure patients.
The CardioMEMS sensor enables wireless measurement of pulmonary artery pressure through a minimally invasive catheter-based procedure, without the need for open surgery.
The technology provides continuous monitoring by transmitting daily measurements related to haemodynamic status and pulmonary artery pressure to the medical team.
This allows healthcare professionals to identify changes in a patient’s condition and detect early signs of deterioration or fluid accumulation before clinical symptoms become apparent.
The remote monitoring system can support timely adjustments to treatment plans and medication dosages according to changes in the patient’s condition.
It may also help reduce the need for frequent hospital visits and emergency admissions while supporting the stability and quality of life of patients and their families.
Dr. Najib bin Zahran Al Rawahi, Director of the National Centre for Cardiac Medicine and Surgery at the Royal Hospital, said the introduction of the technology reflects the Centre’s efforts to keep pace with medical innovations and make greater use of digital technologies in cardiac care.
He praised the medical team involved in the procedure and the efforts aimed at enhancing specialised cardiac services in the Sultanate.
The achievement forms part of the National Centre for Cardiac Medicine and Surgery’s efforts to adopt innovative digital healthcare technologies, strengthen specialised cardiac care and keep pace with international developments in the monitoring and treatment of heart failure.
