India’s Economy Could Reach $38 Trillion in Two Decades, Ajit Doval Says

Roorkee:  India’s National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval said the country’s gross domestic product could rise from $4.015 trillion to $38 trillion over the next 20 years.

Doval made the remarks while addressing the 2026 convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, where he served as chief guest. IIT Roorkee confirmed that Doval delivered the convocation address on Sept. 19.

He told graduating students that they are entering a period of significant transformation and highlighted the role of technology, engineering and innovation in driving social and economic progress.

Referring to the period leading up to 2047 as “Amrit Kaal”, Doval said India is undergoing major changes and moving towards what he described as a promising future.

He encouraged students to demonstrate courage in their professional and personal lives and referred to the example of Lord Ram in describing the importance of courage.

Doval also emphasised the importance of decision-making and developing one’s own principles as essential qualities for leadership.

Sharing an anecdote from his early career in Sikkim, he described three lessons he learned from a Sherpa: knowing where one currently stands, knowing where one wants to go and understanding the path required to reach the destination and return.

The remarks came as part of Doval’s address to graduating students at IIT Roorkee’s two-day 2026 convocation, which is being held on Sept. 19–20.
