Omani Theatre Association Announces Winners of Playwriting Competition
Muscat: The Omani Theatre Association today announced the winners of the second edition of its playwriting competition, with Israa bint Ahmed Al Hinai securing first place for her text “Dancing on the Edge of a Circle.”
The announcement was made during a ceremony held to mark World Theatre Day under the auspices of Mohammed bin Sulaiman Al Kindi, Governor of North Al Batinah, in the presence of theatre practitioners and the public.
Second place went to Mohammed bin Khalfan Al Hamdani for “Half Minds for Sale,” while Fares bin Ahmed Al Balushi secured third place for “Birth After Death.”
The shortlist included ten theatrical texts, reflecting a diversity of themes and creative approaches.
The ceremony featured a performance of “Substitute Teacher,” adapted from a work by Anton Chekhov and presented with an Omani perspective by artist Mohammed Al Raqadi.
Emad bin Mohsen Al Shanfari, Chairman of the Association, said that World Theatre Day highlights the cultural and social role of theatre as a platform reflecting human issues and aspirations. He added that the association continues to support young talents and strengthen the presence of Omani theatre regionally and internationally.
Dr. Rahima bint Mubarak Al Jabri, Vice President of the Association and supervisor of the competition, noted that the second edition attracted 48 submissions. She added that the evaluation was conducted by a specialised jury comprising experts from several Arab countries to ensure professional standards.
The judging panel highlighted the diversity of participating texts and recommended further development of theatrical language and structure, alongside organizing specialised workshops to support emerging playwrights.
