National Initiative Launched to Identify Sources of Air Pollution in Oman

Oman Advances Air Quality Monitoring Through New Scientific Project

Muscat: The Environment Authority, in cooperation with the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech), is implementing a national project to analyze the chemical composition of airborne particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and identify its natural and industrial sources across the Sultanate of Oman.

The project aims to enhance air quality, protect public health, and support applied scientific research, in line with national environmental priorities. It includes the installation of specialized air-quality monitoring equipment, the collection of field samples from urban, industrial, and rural environments, and their analysis using advanced laboratory and technical methods.

The initiative also applies modern numerical and statistical models to determine pollution sources and assess their environmental and health impacts, contributing to evidence-based environmental policymaking.

Specialized technical teams from the Environment Authority, alongside researchers and experts from GUtech, have begun fieldwork in several governorates to ensure comprehensive coverage of diverse environmental conditions and the generation of accurate and reliable scientific data.

During the current phase, low-volume particulate matter monitoring devices for PM2.5 and PM10, along with high-precision technologies, are being utilized in preparation for advanced chemical analysis in laboratories. The outcomes will support the development of a national air-quality database, strengthening scientific studies and environmental decision-making.

This cooperation reflects the commitment to strengthening partnerships between government institutions and academic bodies, integrating scientific research with environmental monitoring, supporting environmentally sound policies, and advancing sustainability goals in the Sultanate of Oman.
