Scientists Discover New Health Benefits of Grapes

London: A recent study published in the journal “Food & Function” has shown that regular consumption of grapes can significantly improve eye health in older adults.

This 16-week randomized, controlled human study is the first of its kind and provides compelling evidence of the benefits of grapes for eye health.

Participants who consumed the equivalent of 1 and a half cups of grapes per day experienced enhanced Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD), reduced levels of harmful advanced glycation end products (AGEs), and increased plasma antioxidant capacity.

In contrast, the placebo group saw an increase in skin AGEs, highlighting the protective role of grapes’ natural antioxidants against oxidative stress and its contribution to better eye health.

The findings are especially noteworthy given the growing aging population’s elevated risk of eye diseases.

Oxidative stress and high levels of AGEs are key risk factors for eye diseases, and this study demonstrates that grapes, with their abundance of antioxidants and polyphenols, can mitigate these risk factors effectively. – ONA
