Mexico City: Researchers in Mexico have uncovered 179 pre-Hispanic artifacts across 13 archaeological sites within the Mundo Sukí Cave in the municipality of Sitalá, Chiapas State.

Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) said the discovery followed information provided by a local tour guide, prompting archaeologists to conduct field investigations between February and June.

The archaeological team documented a collection of censers, ceramic vessels and jars, which preliminary assessments indicate date back to the Classical period (600–900 AD).

The artifacts feature decorative motifs depicting jaguars, owls and serpents, symbols closely associated with the beliefs and cultural traditions of the Zoque civilization.

The Institute confirmed that further archaeological studies will continue using three-dimensional imaging and chemical analysis to identify possible traces of copal incense, ash or bone remains preserved inside the artifacts, contributing to a deeper understanding of the site’s historical and cultural significance.
