    • WHO Warns Global Cancer Cases Could Reach 35 Million by 2050

    Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) warned today that the number of new cancer cases worldwide could reach nearly 35 million annually by 2050 unless urgent action is taken, stressing that cancer remains the world’s second leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases.

    According to the UN News Centre, the WHO said in its Global Cancer Report 2026, prepared in cooperation with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), that cancer claims the lives of more than 26,000 people each day.

    The report stated that approximately 20.6 million new cancer cases and nearly 10 million deaths are recorded annually.

    It noted that reversing the trend requires adopting a people-centred approach to cancer control while addressing persistent inequalities in access to prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and supportive care services.

    Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, said that a person’s chances of surviving cancer should not depend on where they are born or their level of income.

    The report also indicated that around four in 10 cancer cases are linked to preventable risk factors, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, obesity, physical inactivity and certain infections, underscoring the importance of investing in prevention programmes.
