US, Iran Hold Technical Talks in Doha on Maritime Navigation, Ceasefire

Doha: The United States and Iran are holding technical talks in the Qatari capital, Doha, as part of ongoing efforts to reach an agreement on maritime navigation and secure a lasting ceasefire.

An informed source and an Iranian official said that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Qatar’s Prime Minister, who is mediating the process alongside Pakistan to facilitate the talks. However, the mediators are not participating directly in the negotiations.

The discussions are based on a 14-point interim agreement signed last month, aimed at ending the conflict that began following US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February, restoring regional maritime navigation, and reaching a permanent agreement within 60 days.

According to the sources, maritime navigation in the region has partially resumed. Prior to the conflict, the Strait of Hormuz handled around 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade.
