Rubio Eyes Bilateral Talks with China, Russia During ASEAN Gathering

Washington:  US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed openness to holding bilateral meetings with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled to take place in Manila this week.

The visit marks Rubio’s first official trip to the Philippines since assuming office as US Secretary of State.

Rubio previously met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during last year’s ASEAN ministerial meeting in Kuala Lumpur, and the two officials have also held telephone discussions.

Meanwhile, ASEAN leaders, during their recent summit in Cebu, discussed proposals to establish a regional fuel reserve aimed at reducing the impact of global energy market volatility and strengthening energy security for member states.

The ASEAN ministerial meetings are expected to provide an opportunity for diplomatic engagement on a range of regional and international issues.
